The biggest casino in the UK will open in time for the 2012 Olympic Games and it will be conveniently sited just next door to the Olympic Park, in fact in the West field Stratford City shopping mall.
With over 65,000 feet of floor space, there is no other casino in London that can come even close to this vast Las Vegas style casino which will be equipped with thirty eight tables, a poker room that is large enough to accommodate 150 players, 150 slot machines, and over eighty terminals for playing electronic gambling games. The casino, which will operate for 24 hours a day, will be run by Aspers who received the license from Newham Council which was awarded a license by the previous labor government for a large casino. Aspers, which is partly owned by the Australian based A spinal and Crown Limited, had some stiff competition in gaining the license. There had been rival bids from a number of organizations and the tree finalists included Aspers, Apollo Gebting and Great Eastern Quays Casino. The bidding process took many months as the initial six applicants were gradually reduced to the final three.
Once it opens the casino will create 440 new jobs and it will do much to increase the wealth of the borough for many years after the Olympic Games have been consigned to history.
However there remain some points to be settled as both Great Eastern Quays Casino and Apollo Genting are both challenging Newham Council’s decision on the grounds that the Aspers proposal does not include local regeneration, and regional regeneration was imposed by the Gaming Act as a condition for building large casinos.
Whatever the outcome of the appeal, soon London will be able to boast of being home to the biggest casino in the UK.
